HURRICANE IKE HELP STILL NEEDED!

St. Peter’s is heading up the Hope Kitchen brought to the island by St. Vincent de Paul of Houston. Folks are working very hard to set up and run this valuable community asset, especially at this difficult time. However, MANY MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to help out. There are two shifts per day: 9:30 am until 2:30 pm, and 2:30 pm until 7:30 pm…Seven days a week. The site is located on the corner of 25th and Ave H, in Galveston.

At least 20 volunteers are needed at all times to be of service to the poorer neighbors, as well as any others who are now in need. Counselors will be available; a chapel for prayer and rest; a kitchen offering a full meal each day, plus snacks and water as needed; and several large tents with new and gently used clothing for folks of all ages, even some doggie toys for needy pets.

If anyone can help out on one or more days a week during one shift or another or even for just 2 or 3 hours occasionally, the community would be deeply grateful. Although a volunteer orientation meeting took place today about the jobs and how to best do them, “on the job training” will be provided to those who couldn’t attend the meeting.

If you cannot volunteer at this time, please let others know, so they may help. Feel free to forward this email to as many as possible.

It is very important that we show Galveston that Catholics care and are involved in helping others. Please send this info to all the folks you know. Please come by during the working hours or call Miriam Dell’Olio, 409-939-4700, or 409-740-3800, for more info.

Synod on the Bible: Cardinal DiNardo Speaks

The NCR posted a fantastic interview with our Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, by John Allen. Please take the time to read it, and read your Bible!

Allen: So a Biblical imagination is alive and well in Texas?

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo: It is absolutely alive … it may be crazy sometimes, but it’s alive and well. I don’t see that in the Northeast. I really don’t see it. I don’t see it among our leaders, I don’t see it among some of the university people, and I don’t even see it among all of our Catholics. But when you go south of the Mason/Dixon line and get into the Bible Belt, it’s still there. The Biblical vocabulary and imagination is alive.”

Bible Study: “The Sacraments in St Paul”

St Michael’s is hosting a Bible study this coming Monday, October the 6th.

“The Sacraments in St. Paul will begin this coming Monday, October 6 at 7:00 pm in the Activity Building Room 1 – MARK MCNEIL will be providing us with the first lecture which will be an overview of the life and theology of St. Paul. Mark is a wonderful lecturer and teacher of the faith. He is currently the chair of theology at Strake Jesuit. Please come and join us.

We will NOT be breaking up into small groups the first night – but we will be providing you with the book for the study. You are welcome to purchase one on your own. It is by Father Mitch Pacwa and it is entitled ” St. Paul: A Bible Study for Catholics”. The remaining meetings (5 of them) will provide a catechesis on the sacrament to be covered by a guest lecturer (Deacon Tom, Monsignor Rossi, Father Leon, Father Chris and Deacon Nick) followed by small group discussion on the bible study itself.

I hope you will join us! It is a wonderful way to enter into the Scriptures with the Church! “

Alert! Oppose the so-called “Freedom of Choice Act”

Oppose Freedom of Choice Act!

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is again before Congress (S. 1173, H.R. 1964). FOCA is a
radical bill. It creates a “fundamental right” to abortion throughout the nine months of pregnancy.

No governmental body at any level would be able to “deny or interfere with” this right, or to
“discriminate” against the exercise of this right “in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.” For the first time, abortion would become an entitlement the government must condone and promote.

FOCA would go well beyond the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in imposing an extreme
abortion regimen on our country. No other piece of legislation would have such a destructive impact on society’s ability to limit or regulate abortion. It would eliminate a broad range of laws—informed consent laws; parental involvement laws; laws promoting maternal health; abortion clinic regulations; government programs and facilities that pay for or promote childbirth and other health care without subsidizing abortion; conscience protection laws; laws prohibiting a particular abortion procedure (e.g., partial birth abortion); laws requiring that abortions only be performed by a licensed physician; and so on. For a careful legal analysis of FOCA by the USCCB’s Office of General Counsel, see: www.nchla.org/docdisplay.asp?ID=190.

In a September 19 letter to Members of Congress, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Chairman of the USCCB
Committee on Pro-Life Activities, raised grave concerns about any possible consideration of FOCA.
“Despite its deceptive title, FOCA would deprive the American people in all 50 states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry,” and would “counteract any and all sincere efforts by government to reduce abortions in our country.” The Cardinal declared: “We can’t reduce abortions by promoting abortion.” He urged all Senators and Representatives “to pledge their opposition to FOCA.” For full text of the letter, see:
www.usccb.org/prolife/FOCArigaliltr.pdf.

Recommended Actions: Contact your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators by FAX letter, e-
mail, or phone. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202.224.3121; or call Members’ local offices.
Full contact info can be found on Members of Congress’s web sites, at: www.senate.gov and
www.house.gov.

Message to all Members: “Please pledge now to oppose FOCA.” Those Members of Congress who
have signed on as cosponsors of FOCA should be asked to remove their names from the bill. To
check the list of current cosponsors, see: nchla.org/docdisplay.asp?ID=191.

Other Actions:
1. Arrange a formal meeting with your Representative and two Senators.
2. Communicate with your Representative and two Senators at town meetings.
3. Place an ad opposing FOCA in your local Catholic paper or other publication. For an ad by the
Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities urging opposition to FOCA, see:
www.usccb.org/prolife/media/docs/foca.pdf.
4. Write letters to the editor or express your views on call in radio talk shows.
Thanks for all you do in support of life!
